Essential Payment Terms in International Trade

At Samson Lines, we understand the complexities of international trade. Securing the right payment terms is crucial for both exporters and importers to ensure a smooth and secure transaction. This article explores the common payment terms used in international trade.

  1. Advance Payment

In this method, the importer pays the full amount upfront before the goods are shipped. This offers the most security for exporters but can be a deterrent for importers with limited cash flow or trust in new business partners.

  1. Open Account

An open account grants the importer credit, allowing them to receive the goods before making payment. This fosters trust and strengthens relationships but exposes the exporter to the risk of non-payment. Open account terms are usually reserved for well-established trading partners with a proven track record.

  1. Documents Against Acceptance (DAA) DA

This relates to an import where shipping documents are forwarded through a bank to deliver to the importer against acceptance of payment at a future date.

  1. Documents Against Payment (DAP) DP

In this instance, shipping documents covering the goods are forwarded to the bank and they are delivered to the importer on payment.

  1. Consignment Basis

Goods are sent directly to the buyer and the buyer will make the payment after the sale of goods either at agreed intervals or on completion of the sale.

  1. Letter of Credit (LC)

An LC is a financial instrument issued by the importer’s bank, guaranteeing payment to the exporter upon meeting specific conditions, typically the presentation of required documents. This is the most secure form of settlement of international trade.

Choosing the Right Payment Term

The optimal payment term depends on several factors, including:

    • The level of trust between the trading partners
    • The financial strength of the importer
    • The value of the transaction
    • The nature of the goods
