Frequently Asked Questions

Air freight is when cargo is transported by air. It is well known for being fast and having the ability to reach any destination globally.

All services vary from general cargo for standard shipments to special cargo for shipments that have specific handling (e.g., temperature-controlled, hazardous materials, oversized cargo).

There are also express services for instant deliveries and charter flights for special transport of international air freight shipping.

Air freight is when international air cargo shipping is done via dedicated cargo planes, whereas Air cargo is when air shipments are transported on passenger planes as luggage.

The main benefits are speed, reliability of schedule, global air shipping, potentially cheaper insurance premiums due to lower transit times, and heightened security. It also reduces the need for a lot of warehousing and inventory.

The process involves getting a quote, completing necessary paperwork (e.g., commercial invoice and air waybill), packaging the freight correctly, scheduling a pickup, the actual transport, and finally clearing customs upon arrival.

Transit times are variable dependent on the type of service and destination you want. Express air cargo can be 24-48 hours for most destinations, and the standard time is generally 3-5 business days. Charter flights have customized timelines. Weather and customs may impact this.

Samsonlines Air Freight has online tracking systems whereby you provide your shipment reference number (commonly the Air Waybill number) and we will give you the latest status and location of your cargo real-time.

You will mostly need a commercial invoice, a list of packing, and a Bill of Lading (or Air Waybill). Depending on the merchandise, you can also need certificates or permits. Hazardous materials have stricter requirements.

Basic insurance typically covers loss or damage in the event of an accident. Comprehensive insurance provides more extensive coverage for higher-valued or fragile items. It’s a good idea to insure your items in transit.

Credit card, bank transfer, and sometimes pre-arranged terms such as net 30 days for approved customers are common.

Best freight forwarding company - Samsonlines is usually able to assist with special and general cargo such as temperature-controlled cargo, hazardous shipments, heavy freight and oversized,

Virtually any kind of good may be airfrozen shipped via freight, except hazardous materials, e.g. explosives, flames, or poisons, of course. But again, regulation varies airline and destination-wise.

The most important documents are the Air Waybill (AWB), commercial invoice, packing list, and, sometimes, a Certificate of Origin. For air freight import, you might need an import permit and other specialized documents according to the destination country’s customs regulations.

Airports have designated places for loading and offloading of cargo (cargo terminals or loading centers).

Freight forwarders manage the logistics process, which includes documentation, booking with airlines, arranging pickup and delivery, and taking care of customs procedures.

Yes, air freight cargo has to comply with the aircraft’s Unit Load Devices (ULDs) or cargo hold capacity and weight limitations. They change according to the type of the aircraft.

Air freight pricing is usually charged according to the actual gross weight or volumetric weight of the shipment, whichever is higher. Volumetric weight considers how much space the cargo occupies. Air freight rates are typically quoted per kilogram or per cubic meter (with a standard conversion factor).

Along with the underlying freight cost, you might expect to see additional charges like fuel surcharges (FSC), security surcharges (SSC), terminal handling fees, customs clearance fees, and perhaps pickup and delivery charges.

These may be a minimum rate on volume or weight, fuel charges, security charges, airport charges, customs duties, and taxes (if and where applicable on destination), and perhaps insurance costs.

You can often get a quote by providing information about your air shipment, including origin, destination, size, weight, and type of commodity, to a freight forwarder or directly to an airline. Most have online quote websites.

Chargeable weight means the weight used to calculate the shipping cost. It’s either the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight, whichever of the two is higher.

The volumetric calculator is done based on the dimensions of the particular package (length x width x height) and a conversion factor declared by the airline. For example; 1 kg per 6,000 cubic centimeters.
